In all my travels to Southern California, I have seen the Hollywood Sign looming in the distance on more than one occasion. I know it is possible to get closer, but I have never tried. I decided, that this was the time to try! I did the research, I took the time to read about it online, I looked at maps and I asked by word of mouth.
Not going to lie, even during the research portion, it seemed like finding the hike would be complicated. However, I was hopeful that a car full of well traveled adults (and Concierge by profession, no less!) would be able to locate this elusive hike. The drive started out well enough but that didn’t last long. Although we were traveling uphill towards our potential destination… that was not the direction our search was taking. While trying to find the hike, we hit many dead ends in expensive neighborhoods where locals have erected their own barriers! It also didn’t help that we were led in circles by our GPS and There seemed to be an extreme lack in a reliable address available online to use as a landmark.
Although at times frustrating, the hunt for Hollywood wasn’t a complete waste of time. I ended up on random hills with awesome views of the surrounding area.I had the chance to look at stunning homes in the Hollywood Hills! Who doesn’t love to look and day dream at these California Castles? Talk about getting inspired! I was also given the opportunity to take the long way around the popular Griffith Park, and accidentally end up at Griffith Observatory.
The observatory was not only free, but really cool to walk around, especially if you love anything space related. Interesting exhibits and telescopes for the public to enjoy. The outside area also offers a great view of Los Angeles. I was able to SEE the Hollywood Sign and appreciate the moment I was in. Even when I decided it was time to *temporarily* give up on “Operation: Searching for Hollywood”, I still had time to see Urban Lights at the LACMA in downtown Los Angeles. Which was another landmark I wanted to see.
Moral of the story is, not all adventures turn out as planned, but that’s ok! Half of the excitement is the journey. I may not have accomplished the original goal of hiking the Hollywood Sign, but look at all the other cool things I had the opportunity to do. This was a simple example of “you never know where the road will take you”! I WILL hike the Hollywood Sign some day. Stay tuned for that when it happens! Better yet, if you know where this hidden hike trail is, please let me know! 🙂
